Music
St Nicholas CE Primary School’s Music Curriculum
The purpose of our music lessons is to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.
Music is taught around the main skills of:
- Performing
- Listening
- Creating
- Knowledge and Understanding
Within each area we focus on the musical elements:
- Pitch (how high or low a sound is)
- Duration (how long the note/sound lasts)
- Dynamics (how loud or quiet a note/sound is)
- Tempo (the speed – fast/slow)
- Timbre (different characteristics of sounds eg.
- playful/spooky)
- Texture (different ways sounds are combined/layered)
- Structure (different ways sounds are organised)
Delivery of the Curriculum
Music is taught through units set around different song styles from the Charanga Online Music Scheme. The units are used in a flexible manner alongside resources to compliment and enhance learning through a variety of ways including the development of vocabulary.
Here at St Nicholas we experience a wide variety of music learning with the interests and motivation of pupils and staff at the core of this teaching.
Extra-Curricular learning allows our children to experience and enjoy music in a wide range of different ways eg:
Our Choir/ Sing Together Concerts/ Singing in the Community/ learning instruments/ watching shows, live musicians perform/ cluster events with other children/putting on concerts.
