Modern Foreign Languages

St Nicholas CE Primary School Foreign Languages Curriculum

At St Nicholas CE Primary School we study Spanish from EYFS to KS2 as our Foreign Language. The purpose of our Spanish lessons is to help pupils develop their interests and curiosity in the similarities and differences between themselves and others and to extend their communication skills and enhance personal self-esteem. We aim to encourage a love for foreign languages from the start of their Primary Education to give them a head start and to prepare them for the future in KS3 and beyond.

Spanish is taught around the main skills of:

  • Listening: understanding and responding to spoken language from a variety of resources.
  • Speaking: speaking with increasing fluency and confidence, continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation.
  • Reading: understanding and responding to written language from a variety of resources and developing an appreciation of a range of writing.
  • Writing: writing for different purposes and audience. A variety of grammatical structures and phonics is also taught as an integral part of lessons.

Delivery of the Curriculum

Spanish is taught from EYFS through units delivered by a Spanish Language teacher to ensure that they get the very best quality and expertise from the start of their Primary education.

The units are chosen to give pupils a wide range of vocabulary from different topics. The units are used in a flexible manner alongside resources to complement and enhance other areas of the curriculum learning – i.e. science/ literacy/ history/ geography, through a variety of ways including the development of vocabulary and story.

Spanish is taught alongside the cultural and British Values aspect taught within St Nicholas CE Primary School.
