St Nicholas CE Primary School History Curriculum

At St Nicholas CE Primary School, we provide a high quality History Curriculum which inspires pupils to develop a curiosity and fascination with Britain’s past and that of the wider world and instil a love and enjoyment for learning about History so that pupils want to question and find out more independently.

Our teaching equips pupils with a knowledge and understanding of British History and that of the wider world, which helps to stimulate children’s curiosity and fascination to know more about the past. It also allows pupils to develop their understanding of the lives of significant people and events, the process of change, the diversity of different societies and the relationships between different groups and the way this has influenced our lives today. Furthermore our History Curriculum also allows our pupils to begin to understand their own identity and the challenges of their time.

History is taught around the main skills of:

  • Knowledge
  • Chronology
  • Interpretations of History
  • Historical Enquiry
  • Communication

Within each area we focus on:

  • Asking questions about today and the past
  • Making comparisons
  • Research and the validity of research
  • Using historical sources both primary and secondary
  • Developing conclusions

Delivery of the Curriculum

  • The start of each History topic begins with a chronology activity, helping to develop and build upon the pupil’s understanding. This Chronology is embedded right from the Early Years to Year 6
  • In EYFS and KS1 history is taught with a focus on understanding the differences between the past and present.
  • Within KS2 all history topics are taught in chronological order to embed understanding how time has changed and the impact of history has upon the present day.

Within the History units we make our children aware of the British Values that are encompassed right throughout the ages and the impact that has.
