St Nicholas CE Primary School Art Curriculum

The purpose of our Art Curriculum at St Nicholas’ is to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love and appreciation for art/artists and to nurture their natural talents as individuals to increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.

Art is taught around the main skills of:

  • Knowledge and Understanding of art/ medium used/ skills needed
  • Observation of real life objects including buildings/ artists at work
  • Perseverance to achieve and aspire
  • Creativity
  • Self- expression and self-reflection
  • Discipline
  • Within each lesson we focus on the artistic elements:
  • Colour (Primary, Secondary and Tertiary)
  • Form ( shape and space)
  • Line (any straight or curved lines)
  • Shape (2D and 3D)
  • Value (The lightness or darkness, tones and colours)
  • Space (areas around or between components in a piece)
  • Texture ( visual feel or actual feel of a piece)

These are the basic building blocks for producing & creating artistic pieces.

We enjoy using techniques such as: drawing/ painting/ printing/collage/textiles/ 3D art/perspective/ digital art.

Delivery of the Curriculum

At St Nicholas’, Art is taught over blocked units to give children the chance to develop and embed skills over a longer period of time. Units maybe thematic for enjoyment and appreciation or skills based for learning.

Here at St Nicholas’, we are lucky to have gifted members of staff that can provide valuable knowledge within this area and share their skills with the children.
